  • Briancon

    Briancon

With Giulia being stuck in the UK, I was prepared to climb some British grit while visiting her over there. She was actually more psyched to climb French blocks instead and somehow we settled on Briancon. I had literally no beta and was fully prepared to follow her psych. Luckily, Seth had a book and some info to help me get started. I grabbed his guidebook at the airport and we parted ways; him to Rifle and me to France.

The flight wasn’t so bad other than being long and customs being weird. As in, France and Switzerland literally didn’t care as long as I had my American passport scanned into a box.

Our rental was supposed to be some tiny high clearance manual euro thing but Hertz screwed me in a weird way. I originally went to the French side to pick up my car but the reservation was on the Swiss side. I told them they sucked and they gave me a free upgrade to a new Prius. This thing was both super nice and awful at the same time. Nice in the sense that after a full 10 days of driving around and the 3.5 hours to and from the airport to France, we filled up like once. Awful that it was huge compared to other euro cars and the roads felt way too small for this thing. I was massively jet lagged and essentially lost a day to driving to our home in the alps.

our massive car on the left trying to fit in a tiny spot

    Day 1: Meteorite

We followed the guidebook to get to section 1 but ended up in section 3 (meteorite). Whatever because there’s rock and we were here to climb it. What’s interesting about this limestone was that it wasn’t totally polished to hell but the first two climbs were quite weird for the grade. After doing some more easyish things I decided to jump on something in the 7b (5.12b) range and got my ass handed to me. I was mainly reaching up blind to a crimp a lot. Oh man, what a jump in difficulty.

    Day 2: Entraygues

We followed the guidebook again and the guidebook showed a straight line from the last village to the parking lot. We parked at what looked like the right place and crossed a bridge that had a sign that said we were 1.75 hour hike away from the place. Great guide. After meeting other people looking for the area, we decided to drive further up the road to see if there was other parking. Several km and switchbacks later, we get to more parking. We park and hike way longer than the guidebook said to a river crossing and not a bridge like the guidebook showed and eventually made it to the wall. It wasn’t huge but here the gneiss was incredibly grippy unlike the sandy slopey rock at Farley. We do a bunch of things here and I get ready to battle this 7c in the main area that consisted mostly of giant holds with a little boulder problem near the beginning. I got some pretty good spray from some folks on the ground and made it to the top. Because of the number of people on the wall here and the sun, I didn’t quite get the number of burns I needed to send. Sad. I know I’ve got it next time!

    Day 3: Rif D’Oriol

After our crazy ordeal of trying to find the place yesterday, we opted for the easiest parking and fastest approach. Parking was indeed easy and the hike in was only a few minutes down some fixed line and wooden stairs across a little waterfall and into a small canyon with a river running through it. Cute. I warm up on a 7a near the entrance. It was a terrible warm up with a cruxy sequence consisting of sloping crimps and not ideal feet. Giulia gets on what she thought was a 6b despite 6c+ written on the rock. Needless to say, it didn’t go so well. What the guidebook didn’t show were several new lines on the wall which heavily confused us on what climb was what. I get on what I thought was a 7a+ and eat all the poo and spend forever trying to figure out a sequence only to get told that I was on an 8a and the 7a+ was an independent line to the left. Our guidebook literally didn’t show it that way. I down dyno’ed to clean and got on that 7a+ which was quite fun. We get on one more on the way out because it was an interesting feature.

Day 4: Little Canada and Secret Garden

We headed out to get to Oreac which was just a little past Tournoux, where we went the first day. The dirt roads got bad enough that I was scared for our rental and turned back towards Tournoux. We decided to check out some other cliffs, specifically Little Canada. The hike was easy and the cliff looked pretty sweet minus some initial choss. We warmed up on a climb called Squamish which started in a choss band that was strategically cemented together to form usable holds that wouldn’t immediately explode off the wall. After the initial whatever climbing, you get to the main event of massive jugs traversing left with the small exception that they were all underclings. Very fun!

all i got was this video of giulia walking out

We then headed over to Secret Garden and I get on a 6b because there was the sickest looking left facing flake system. Too bad it was guarded by the ugliest slab. I get on another climb to the left that looks like far less slab. I was wrong. It was a slab sandwich with short overhanging jug sections in between.

    Day 5: Face bouc

Another day where our guidebook brought us not quite where we wanted to be. We headed towards Ailefroide and the drive was nice but the guidebook wanted us to get on this really rough road for the remaining couple minutes of driving to the main parking lot. We didn’t do that road and parked nearby and hiked that road instead. After getting a little confused on this road, we eventually made our way to face bouc. Specifically, the right side, which was in the shade. Wow! It’s too bad there were like 9 climbs in the upper section with 3 shared starts and nobody wanted to do any of the climbs of one of the starts. We warm up on something the guidebook said was a 7a+ (5.12a) and I spent FOREVER trying to make it feel the grade. I couldn’t. Eventually, we went to the upper section and waited in line behind maybe 5ish people. Some were generous and didn’t spend a lot of time on their burns. Others spent forever dogging up each bolt. When it came to me, all I could think about was not waiting in line again so I tried hard and rested on all the holds and eventually sent and got out of that line. I try the thing to the left that had a really funky boulder problem near the start. I wasn’t tall enough to reach a particular hold and tried to change up my beta for my size. It didn’t work.

the upper section of this wall where the good stuff is

    Day 6: La Gorge

Giulia wanted to check this place out. The approach was a little longer than expected but we arrived as the second party at the wall. There was 6b+ in the rock and we warmed up on it. What our guidebook didn’t show were like 20 new lines here. The worst part was that all these bolts were so close together that it was hard to tell where you’re actually supposed to go. I think we did the 6c+ finish on our 6b+ but who knows. We get on some other stuff and the area eventually turned into a cluster. People on literally every line to the right of us and people rappelling off their multipitch climbs right on top of us. I try to get a few more and we leave. Not sure I’d come back here.

you can see the only other party climbing in the sun.
    our warm up.
    our dinner spot

    Day 7: Face bouc (again)

With rain in the forecast and not a whole lot of places we can go with roads that didn’t suck, we decided to head back to Face bouc so that Giulia could get on Punishman Park. The queue for the climb was almost as insane as before. I get on that climb to the right that had a separate start. It looked like a kneebar tunnel so I equipped two knee pads and thrutched my way to the tunnel. I get my knee bars but they’re not entirely secure. Little bits of the rock were breaking off. I grab the only jug I could reach and I find that I’m literally holding onto the jug while double horizontal kneebars are the only thing keeping me from eating it. I toss the jug down and decided that I didn’t want to climb this in fear I’d kill someone below me. The route split where I was at and ended up cutting left and swinging back into the bolt line. Whatever climbing I did was supposed to be 8a but felt way less chossy than the knee bar tunnel. I aid my way to the chains and spend forever trying to clean. What a nightmare.

Giulia on Punishman Park. You can see the kneebar tunnel to her right

    Day 8: Rocher Maubert

Since we were over 3 hours away from the airport, we decided to stay somewhere close to Geneva so that we didn’t have to drive so far on our last day to catch our international flights. Giulia found a little crag on the way there. We park on the side of the road and walk through some cow patties and we’re at the wall right next to the road. Oh boy were these climbs manufactured. We hike up to the upper level with what looks like more interesting things. We were right. We get on a 7a+ that looked like big holds. There were big holds but then slabbed out at the top. We climb a few more things, it rained a little, sun comes in and we leave on our long drive to our chalet.

    French people suck at parking
The upper level with the more interesting things

    our last dinner in France

    Final thoughts:

I found it interesting that each crag had a different type of rock. We climbed, gneiss, granite, limestone and something else.

And I always learn something on these trips:

    1. Don’t fly into Geneva to climb in Briancon.
    2. The guidebook for Briancon is ass. We created our own list of GPS coordinates in Google maps to help guide us to the climbs and parking. UKC or 8a might have a more extensive list of climbs and more beta.
    3. Getting an international driving permit wasn’t needed.
    4. Stick clips were not necessary either.

I had fun and I’d come back but there are so many other places in France and in the world I haven’t climbed at. But it was really nice knowing that this spot was a solid 10c degrees lower than anywhere else in France.

Since I was too lazy to create and log all my ticks on MP, you’ll have to find me on 8a to see what I got on: https://www.8a.nu/user/aaron-hwang/sportclimbing

  • Another Bouldering Trip

    Another Bouldering Trip

Not sure who’s nervous about Moe’s Valley getting bulldozed over, but I was. Hearing that this bouldering destination may not be there in a year or so got me scared that I was missing out. So instead of our yearly trip to Red Rock, we detoured to Moe’s.

We landed, picked up pads and headed to Red Springs for some quickies. Cirque Du Soleil was a beautiful piece of rock which really taxed my shoulder. Since we had a parks pass, we headed into the loop to Willow Springs to try some boulders there. Wish someone told me that most of this stuff was essentially slab because I tried quite hard.

    I didn’t send this thing.

Then it was onto Moe’s and what a surprise.

    the fang

On the first day, I couldn’t do the second move of this one V4 (No-Mind) in the Sentinel area and I kept dabbing on this easy V6 (The Fang). I was having a hard time. Then somehow I flashed a V7 (Paradise Lost) and fell on a V2 (Double Dab). What a confusing day.

Giulia on some very bad v1 or v2
    cutting on device igniter left

I eventually got into the groove and did basically what Jonah told me to do, target V6s. I did a ton of them and they were all very different:

    • Pink Lady was mostly giant holds.
    • Spectro was all about a huge jumping span.
    • Israil was a slanted sloper rail.
    • Kung Pao had weird moves all over and allowed me to make use of a weird knee bar.
    • Boris had me slapping slopers.
    • Underwhelmed and The Fang’s crux was to not dab.

Not going to lie, my psych waned a bit and was really happy to hit the Hurricave and meet up with Micah. I wasn’t all that psyched about the hike up but the climbing, other than the stuff around the edge of the cave, was a whole lot of fun. The less chossy climbs had feet that reminded me of Rifle with some of the biggest and baddest jugs I’ve ever grabbed in my entire life. There are draws and anchors everywhere and figuring out where to go was actually quite confusing. I didn’t bring my helmet and I honestly wish I did.

I need to learn how to pull on crimps, like for real. It was holding me back from doing Dead Rabbit (pulling off a left hand sidepull crimp), The 6th Extinction (another left hand sidepull crimp), Indolence and Ripploid to name a few.

I need to work on my wrists more which was absolutely hurting me from doing Bazooka Tooth and maybe Teepee Traverse. There were a lot of instances where I had to turn my wrist into a mantle and it was rough.

There were quite a bit of toe hooks. This was nice since I don’t get to use them often. However, my fancy new Instinct VSR LV are looking pretty trashed.

I’ve never experienced friction so good in my life. Sticking to the slopers on Boris was like a magic trick.

Will I be back? Maybe, but I think I’d be more psyched to play in the Hurricave more. Thanks Giulia for letting me climb 11 days in a row and taking so many pics and videos!

  • Giulia’s first time at the red

Giulia’s first time at the red

Last year, we hit up the Buttermilks. It was my first time there and it was great but I gave up my annual trip to the red for it. I wasn’t giving it up again this year.

We flew in on a flight with some MITOC folks, grabbed our rental wrangler, grabbed food then went climbing at Phantasia. I tried Phantasia but ate the poo. I just needed to try but I sucked.

Second day, we were at the Infirmary. Mainly because it’s overhanging with some moderates and it was drizzly in the morning. We met the CRG Cambridge crew there. I somehow managed to climb all new things and logged no falls. Yay.

    Giulia on Typhoid Mary.
    Giulia on magic bed
    Alex
    J-Hag on Last Rites
    John further up Last Rites

Next day was supposed to be cold and we had originally thought to go to Gold Coast / Solar Collector for some warmth but ended up hiking into the Gallery. Giulia got to try Starry Night while I did some random stuff around it. We did a little at Curbside before heading home. It was a half day for me.

    Giulia up on Starry Night

Today was my day since Giulia was resting so I decided to hit Bob Marley. I took a painful fall on Enjoy the Process when my right foot got stuck doing a Dyno. On the second go, my hand slimed off the Dyno hold and tore off some skin. I tried skinny love but was dumb not to bring a knee pad. It was painful. After two wrong turns on our way to Drive-by, we arrived. I got back on Head and Shoulders after 10 years and realized that I didn’t have knee bar tech back then. I wanted to get on Hakuna Matata but it was getting gang banged so I did the climbs around it. One of them being described as the worst climb at drive by. It was actually pretty okay.

Back to Drive by. Giulia does breakfast burrito and I get on Hakuna Matata. I get a burn on Dirty Smelly Hippie and get all the knee bars on my actual knee. It was painful. I eat it and try again and get the knee bars on my actual knee again and fall. What the hell? I get on Mazie Mae to give my knee a break since it was all bruised and scraped up. I finally figured out all the moves. yay. I dry fire off this right hand Gaston next burn and I am mad. Whatever. There will be a next time I’m sure. We get gas station fried chicken after and I must say, I haven’t had better from a gas station.

Giulia’s first time in Miur Valley and we hit Solarium. She gets on Magnum Opus and I get on Summer Sunshine and some Mr Petey climb. Giulia gets on Super Best Friends and Delicatessen. We head over to Arsenal to try Bullfighter in the sun. It was pretty rough in the sun then over to the Great Arch for some slopers for Giulia. Giulia and I get on Beef Stick. She thinks it’s the softest 12a she’s ever been on. Back to Solarium. Some guys have their rope on Mirage but they say they aren’t getting on it for 10 minutes. I ask if I can get a 10 min burn. They say yes so I fire up Mirage in about 10 mins. Such a good climb.

    Delicatessen I think
    Super best friends maybe?
    Bathtub mary

It’s my day so we head to the lode. Wanted to warm up on Stain and I did and barely sent it. Still feels hard. Giulia gets on a cool looking climb to the left and we head to undertow where I get revenge on SKWBA which still felt hard. Giulia gets on Chainsaw and I get on Resurrection. Suss’ed out beta first try then fired it second go in the rain/t-storm. Was nice to run into Koti and Jess there.

    Giulia’s first Redpoint BBQ experience

Chocolate Factory because some of the stuff continues to be dry. Giulia gets on Oompa and Loompa. I try Scarlet Scorchdropper which is a beautiful scary line. Then Gilgamesh, Fatman and Shootin’ Hot Hugs. Most of these climbs were dry. Saw Jix at Fatman, D-Flynn at EGBG, Liam at Miguel’s and Damien while waiting for our pizza. Also some Rumney folks at the gear shop. Wow.

    Giulia on Scarlet Scorchdropper
    I found a wild Jix
I think I run into Dan on trips more than I run into him at home
    Liam!
    Giulia’s first Miguels experience

Giulia really wanted to get back on Hakuna Matata so we went back to drive by. I warm up on Dirty smelly and my foot slips at the upper crux right before the final knee bar. Sad. Giulia warms up on Head and Shoulders I get back on Dirty smelly and send with fresh beta from Joe, the guy that had just gone up. Giulia sends Hakuna hanging draws. Nice! I get on Mazie Mae and one hang doing the dyno at the top. Sad. Giulia tries Naked and botches the top. We head to Bob Marley and I get on Skinny Love and fall at the crux. I try again and send with Jix on belay.

    Hakuna Matata

Final day and half day since we needed to catch our flight. It’s sub freezing temps and I didn’t want to risk disaster getting out of the Motherlode so we went back to where we started at Phantasia. It was almost too cold to climb but we made it work. Then the long drive to the airport and the 5 hour delayed flight.

    Trusty wrangler

    • I’m happy I finally sent Dirty Smelly Hippie although I wished it didn’t take that long.
    • I really don’t like my blakpad.
    • I really do like my La Sportiva Theory’s for this rock.
    • Our crappy $17 pole we bought at walmart got us up all but 5 climbs then failed entirely on our last day. Perfect!
    • Our rental wrangler got us up and down the lode without much problem but the 4xe hybrid part of the car was useless and we got 20mpg average.

Overall, it was nice seeing people I haven’t seen in a while. Sadly we didn’t have time to catch up because climbing is more important? Next time though! Except, I don’t know if I’ll make my way back to the Buttermilks or not.

  • Blakpad

    Blakpad

I’ll start off with saying that knee pads are aid and I’m an aid climber because I suck and have poor pain tolerance.

My knee pad journey started out many years ago on some climb at Rumney. I’m not sure which one it was but I purchased the send climbing classic mini because I thought it’d fit my leg better than the larger one. I was right to some degree. They fit over my pants and had good clearance to not be overlapping the leg loops on my harness. They provided enough coverage to keep my legs from getting messed up and the two straps secured the pad nicely. I think I got made fun of by essentially everyone at Rumney for the smaller size of my pad and the fact that I never used duct tape or spray adhesive.

    buckles underneath my leg

My stubbornness kept me from using duct tape or adhesive spray when I sent Urbansurfer but I needed something a bit more than that 2 strap mini pad. Enter the triple strap, large, slim si pad from Send. The 3 straps and si material kept the pad in place better than the double strap. Because it was physically longer than the mini pad, I could slide the pad down to almost my knee cap and not fasten the lowest strap and still have a secure fit. This was good.

crimp scampi gets a pic of me firing the crux of suburban. 3 strap knee pad covers entire leg

I was planning on buying a Blakpad overseas and having it shipped to me but the current tariff situation is so messed up that I abandoned any of those plans. Luckily, I was able to get a hold of one after a friend undersized his pad.

blakpad eon with the buckles lined up on the right side of my leg

Unlike the Send pads, the neoprene inner is secured with Velcro instead of hand holding it in place while you try to strap the pad on. Also unlike the Send pad, only one side of the buckling system is attached to stretchy material to allow for the straps to move to the side of the leg instead of wrapping underneath the leg. The triple strap Eon is about the same length of the Send mini but having 3 straps ensures that it’s a little more secure. The rubber is thicker and squared off on the edges to allow for more rubber contact with the rock. Also, these pads are side and size specific to allow you to have the buckles out of the way while you knee bar.

When I want this thing on tight, like I normally like my knee pads, the non exposed metal fasteners attached to the stretchy material of the pad dig into the back of my leg which makes it quite uncomfortable. Since these three straps are closer together, it isn’t as secure as the large Send pad which distributes those 3 straps over more area. Finally, it’s much harder to get this pad closer to my knee cap due to where that first strap is.

I’ll be breaking this pad in more but so far, it’s only been ok.
